Jordan, Minnesota was founded in 1854. In 1853, a man named William Holmes took out a claim of 160 acres where Jordan is now located, and platted the village. William, his wife and his oldest son Orin lived in a log home built in what was later to become the town of Jordan. It is said to have been located on the corner of Water Street and Broadway Street (where Empire's Wok is now). In 1854, the second family arrived in Jordan, the Varner's. William Varner, his wife and 10 children built a log home on Varner Street and First Street. Jordan was originally known as "Holmes Mill". Mr. Holmes and Mr. Varner each wanted the town to be named after the other, but decided together to call it Jordan, after the Jordan that sits beside the River Jordan. |
